Day: September 8, 2184
“And that’s everything” Cosmo said, “That’s everything that happened to me… before I came back.” Cosmo exhaled deeply as she lowered her head in sadness and shame. The rest of the freedom fighters had gathered for a special event today. However, before the event started, they left to go, Cosmo requested that everyone meet up at Tails house to discuss what had happened to her last night. Before going to sleep the night before, Cosmo felt a shock in her head and began to have a serious headache. Suddenly, a flash of memories came before her, including everything that happened to her in the afterlife. While she was excited to tell them everything that had happened to her, she was afraid everyone would hate her for some of the things she did, including killing Lucas.
Sonic sat the entire time, with his arms crossed as he stared at Cosmo. He didn’t even really know what to say after everything Cosmo had told them. It was a lot to process for Sonic and everybody else in the room, especially Tails. Only about a week ago, Tails and Cosmo had shared their first date, first kiss, AND they had confessed their undying love for each other. After hearing that Cosmo had indirectly killed Dark Oak, Tails was scared. To think that Cosmo’s powers were capable of going out of control and killing someone scared Tails. What if Cosmo had a mental breakdown? Could she possibly critically hurt someone as much as she did Lucas? Cosmo was lucky enough to have Tails support her in convincing the rest of Mobius that Cosmo wasn’t a serious threat and should be accepted. Tails just wished that it would’ve been just as easy to convince everyone that Shawn was just as innocent as Cosmo was.
Then, Tails, who was sitting next to Cosmo, placed his hand on top of Cosmo’s. Cosmo looked up in shock as she looked directly at Tails.
“So,” Tails started, “I guess that means your powers are a lot more powerful than we knew.”
“Yes…” Cosmo replied, “Are you all still okay with me? I will understand it if you hate me now…”
“What?!” Sonic exclaimed, “Why would we hate you?”
“I killed someone Sonic!” Cosmo replied, with tears now falling down her face, “I ended someone’s life! I’m no better than my father…”
“Cosmo,” Knuckles replied from the other side of the room, “You did what you did because you were scared. Had you not done what you did, Bolide would’ve been killed. You saved your brothers life, and what you did wasn’t murder, you were defending your brother.”
“Do… Do you really mean it?” Cosmo said as she sniffed and wiped the tears away from her eyes.
“Of course, Cosmo.” Tails replied, “None of us here are ever gonna change what we think of you, especially me. We love each other, remember?”
Cosmo’s face had a shade of pink come across her cheeks from her boyfriend’s remark, “Of course, Tails.” She replied, “And I love you just as much.”
Tails smiled as he quickly planted a kiss on Cosmo’s lips. Cosmo blushed even more as she embraced Tails, resting her head on his shoulders.
“We should get going.” Jane said, who came back from the kitchen. Jane was wearing a pink dress and tan high heels. It was clear that Jane had been crying, but no one chose to address it. Jane hadn’t been very happy since Shawn’s departure. She would spend most of her days either eating, sleeping, or crying in the spare bedroom Amy had provided her. Amy walked by her side as she rubbed Jane’s back.
“Jane’s right.” Amy continued, “We’re gonna be late, Sonikku.”
Sonic nodded his head, “Yeah. Let’s get moving.” Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Cosmo, Amy, Rouge, and Cream all stood up as they made their way to the funeral home. The freedom fighters had decided to give Shawn a funeral, but needed time to find a funeral home that would host Shawn’s funeral. Eventually, since they couldn’t find a funeral home that would provide their service, Tails had seen an opening in the forest during a walk with Cosmo. The group decided that this would be the best place to have the funeral since they couldn’t find anything else. After walking for 20 minutes, the group made it to the opening in the forest. When they got there, Brad from Herthia was sitting there waiting, including several others from Herthia that wished to attend Shawn’s funeral. The funeral consisted of about 30 chairs, a few tables behind the chairs for drinks, round tables about 50 feet away from the funeral service for the luncheon, and a few pictures of Shawn back at the area for the funeral service. Sonic walked up to Brad and shook his hand.
“Thank you for coming out.” Sonic said.
“Thank you for inviting Herthia,” Brad replied, “Shawn would’ve liked this.”
“I’m sure he would.”
“Damn… it still hasn’t gone through my mind yet that Shawn is dead. I just can’t wrap my mind around it.” A female then approached Brad and rubbed his shoulder and requested him to come with her. Brad obliged and followed her away from Sonic. Sonic and the freedom fighters then moved to the front row and took their seats while the rest of the people attending the funeral took a seat. There were no mobians at the service, except for four Mobians who sat in the far back and were not recognizable. Even with some showing up, Tails was still very discouraged by this. Did everyone really hate Shawn this much? Did they not even have the decency to at least mourn for someone who lost his life?
Tails’s thoughts were suddenly cut off by the sound of light music playing, signaling the beginning of the funeral. Sonic exhaled deeply as he stood and walked up to the podium and looked at the people before him. Sonic then waited as the light music slowly faded away
“Thank you all for coming out today.” Sonic said, “I understand that the crowd here is small today and know of the controversy surrounding Shawn and the feelings of the Mobians. But know that my opinion… the freedom fighters opinion… will not change. We have seen shawn firsthand. We know what he did and what he was capable of. Shawn was not only a great fighter and a great strategist, he was a great friend; doing what he could to help any of use whenever we were in a down mood or upset. Tails is a prime example of this. He was able to help my brother recover when I didn’t have the means of doing so. I remember when I first saw Shawn land down on Mobius. I originally thought Eggman had created a new robot. However, as time went on, I got to realize that he was alive, and his excitement and enthusiasm showed it. I know many people on Mobius will hate me for saying this, but Shawn was one of the nicest people you will ever meet, putting his own life at risk to save countless others.”
Sonic then stepped down as one of Shawn’s favorite songs, “could have been me” by the struts turned on. Jane began to cry as the lyrics talked of how the singer wanted to do great things and be remembered, which was the motto that Shawn went by. As the song came to a close, Tails made his way up to the stand. Before starting, he quickly looked at Cosmo, who was looking back at him. She nodded her head to Tails, which made him gain his confidence. Tails then cleared his throat.
“Sonic mentioned it himself but I’ll say it again. Shawn, in a way, saved my life. He first showed up as I was still dealing with the loss of Cosmo. Upon first seeing him, I hated him due to his previous ties to the Metarex. However, after getting to know him more and his story, I learned that Shawn and I had many things in common. He also had to deal with loss and depression. Shawn was able to help me, and I was able to help him. When I was feeling down and sad, he was able to give me hope. Whenever he was having problems with his suit or anything else, I was able to give him aid and help. We were able to obtain a bond stronger than any other bond I was able to obtain excluding Cosmo and Sonic. Shawn was my second brother. We leaned on each others shoulders whenever we needed help or support. I will miss Shawn dearly, but I know that he wouldn’t want me to be depressed or extremely sad, he would want everyone that knew him to be happy, so I’ll do everything in my power to spread Shawn’s stories and happiness to as many people as I can on his behalf, so that way I know… and he knows… that his story and life will be remembered.”
Tails then took a seat as the next song, “centuries” by fall out boy played for everyone in attendance. Jane’s turn was up next as she walked up to the stand towards the end of the song. She hadn’t been looking toward this moment ever since the funeral was announced as she knew she would become extremely emotional, considering the last time she saw Shawn was when he was confessing his love for her. She felt it was unfair that he was taken from her just as the next step in their relationship was beginning, but knew that there was nothing that she could do now. As the song came to a close, Jane looked up and towards everyone watching.
“I first met Shawn 3 years ago as he was bleeding out in the middle of the street. My father was taking me home when he noticed Shawn in the street. I can’t recall everything that happened after that as he told me to keep my head down and not look due to the blood. After we brought him back to our house and healed the stab wound in his ribs, I got to aid and care for Shawn. Originally, I thought nothing of my relationship with Shawn as nothing more than two friends looking out for each other. However, as I got to know him more and the struggles he went through as a child, I came to grow more feelings towards him, constantly wanting to sit next him and never leave his side. Unknowingly to my own conscience, I was beginning to fall in love with him. When we were separated after the attack from the Metarex, I never thought I’d see him again. However, a few months later, after being apprehended by the Metarex, he saved me from the abandoned Metarex base I was stuck in. After being reunited, It felt as though we were back on Herthia, being kids and not having to worry about war. It almost felt as though we weren’t even fighting a war whenever I was with him. I was hoping after this war that we would be able to be together; that we would be able to forget the wars the leveled Herthia and live our lives in peace. Unfortunately, fate had other thoughts for Shawn.”
Jane could feel tears falling down her face, but continued on anyway, “I don’t believe that this funeral should be of mourning, but a celebration. A celebration for the things Shawn brought to all of us. Whether you only got to see him for 3 minutes or 3 years, Shawn would do anything in his power to bring happiness to others and make things right for any conflict that he met. Even if his life has been taken from him unfairly, his spirit still flows within all of us. And I hope, much like Tails had said, that I and many others will be able to tell his story: his story of even in his darkest times, even when all seemed lost, he would still put his life on the line for others. No matter how beaten or how bruised he was, Shawn would do anything for anyone. And I am hoping that everyone in the galaxy will carry this trait on for him as he watches over us in the afterlife.”
Jane then smiled as tears continued to trickle down her cheeks and left the stand to retake her seat next to Amy, who embraced her tightly as the final song, “Hands Held High” by Linkin Park played through the speakers. As the song spoke of war and the destruction it brought with it, everyone at the service was at least slightly moved by the song, knowing that they had seen what war brought with it: misery and despair. Even after the song ended, the attendees remained in silence, paying their respects and remembering Shawn. After the funeral service was over, everyone made their way to the round tables to enjoy the food provided from the luncheon, which had been made by Vanilla. Everyone at the party gathered and socialized, embracing each other and sharing fond memories of Shawn and the things he did.
After a couple of hours, everyone became tired and decided to end the service. As everyone made their way home, Jane walked up to take one last look at the pictures near the funeral area. There were three pictures: one showing Shawn back when he was just a kid and had just been saved by Jane’s family. The picture showed the young Shawn smiling on top of a hill, with skyscrapers behind him and the sun setting. The second picture showed Shawn as a teenager, smiling with Jane as they played an arcade shooter together, aiming the plastic rifles at the digital screen. The third picture showed a group photo from the Blue Typhoon that was taken after Cosmo’s coming back party. The picture showed all of the freedom fighters smiling, including Shawn in Jane, in which Shawn had his arm around Jane in the respective photo. A flood of emotions went down Jane’s face as she began to sob and try to keep the tears from falling down her face. But it was to no avail. Amy walked up from behind her and rubbed her hand on her back.
“It’s okay Jane,” Amy said, “Just let it out.”
Jane sniffed as she wiped away the tears from her face for perhaps the 100th time that day. “No,” Jane said, “It’s fine. Shawn would want us all to move on and be happy for him, so… I’ll just smile. That’s all he would want from us.” Amy smiled as well as she and Jane made their way back to their home to lie down for the night. Meanwhile, Tails and Cosmo had made it back to Tails house. As they entered, Cosmo stopped and twiddled her fingers and began to blush. Tails stopped shortly after and looked back at Cosmo.
“Everything okay, Cosmo?” Tails asked.
“Yes,” Cosmo asked, her blush becoming much more obvious, “I was just wondering if… I could start sleeping with you from now on?” Tails blushed even more, not knowing what to say. He didn’t want things to be awkward, since they had only started officially dating a week ago, but he also didn’t want to turn down her request.
“Umm…” Tails replied, a blush appearing on his face as well, a smile then appearing across his face, “Sure Cosmo, anything for you.” Cosmo then leaped towards Tails to give him a hug, knocking him down to the ground. Cosmo got up and realized she was lying on top of Tails. Her face was almost entirely pink as Tails shared the same feeling. Cosmo leaned towards Cosmo and gave him a quick kiss and looked away in embarrassment.
“S-Sorry Tails.” Cosmo said in an awkward tone.
Tails laughed, “It’s okay Cosmo.” Tails began to blush hardly as well. Cosmo then stood up and held out her hand, in which Tails took her hand as she helped him up.
“You can head to my bed now, I’ll meet you there. I just need to get something really quick, okay?” Tails said.
“Okay then, Tails.” Cosmo replied, “I’ll see you in a bit then.” Cosmo planted one last kiss on his cheek as she left him to go to his bedroom. Tails stared at Cosmo, admiring his girlfriend one each second he could before she disappeared into his bedroom. Tails’s smile quickly went away as he sighed and walked over to his desk. Upon reaching his desk, Tails pressed a button hidden underneath the table, pushing the table up and revealing a tall locker underneath it. Upon the locker coming open, the locker opened to reveal Shawn’s body armor and a scaled version of his helmet and a few other objects relating to him. Tails exhaled one last time as he looked over the items before him.
“Okay Shawn… your turn.”
